Societal norms and expectations so frequently shape our thoughts and actions that the notion of choosing yourself and embracing authenticity seems to be an act of revolution.
Additionally, age and status, it seems, are no exceptions to the ways that we distort reality for the sake of being accepted or seeking approval.
Coco Chanel stated a timeless truth: “The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.” The meaning I extracted from these words is that bravery is found in the ability to express individuality and beliefs without fear. Thinking deeply about Chanel’s statement, I concluded there’s a universal lesson here: It takes immense courage to acknowledge, accept, appreciate, and, most importantly, to embrace yourself with love.
Instead, many have stepped onto the path of seeking external validation, believing that our worth is determined by the acceptance and approval of others. It’s a path dotted with uncertainty, leaving us anxiously awaiting confirmation of our value to those around us. We search for all the reasons to open ourselves to love from others; however, the truth is that validation from others is not a prerequisite for our self-worth. While it can be reassuring to know we are accepted, liked, or even loved, it’s not the fundamental measure of our value.
So, the important question to ask is whether you have the courage to choose yourself without asking why. Equally important: Will you choose yourself just because?
And, are you willing to Unbind from societal norms and expectations? Do you have the strength to uphold your values, even when they diverge from the mainstream? Can you hold yourself accountable for your choices and actions, regardless of external opinions? Are you empowered to say NO when NO aligns with your authenticity?
Choosing yourself is an act of Independence of Being. It means understanding that your identity and worth are not subject to the needs of others. It’s about recognizing that your uniqueness is a strength, not a weakness. It’s the audacity to pursue your passions, dreams, and aspirations, whether or not they conform to societal standards. It’s allowing another to show up in your life with all the reasons to trust opening yourself to love. But it turns out they aren’t reasons for loving them…
… they’re reasons to love your authentic self.
Embracing authenticity requires self-reflection and self-acceptance. It’s a journey of self-discovery where you learn to appreciate your strengths and acknowledge your weaknesses without judgment. It’s understood that your choices should reflect your deepest desires and values, not the expectations of others.
To be clear, the path to choosing yourself is not without challenges. Society may resist change and non-conformity, especially in the rapidly shifting landscape of AI-driven content. Remember, courage is not the absence of fear; it’s the willingness to act despite it. Daring to be yourself and speak your heart, not only will you find inner peace and fulfillment, but you may inspire those around you to follow their hearts.
